Google+ Zynga Poker

It seems that my article about Google+’s version of Crime City got a lot of attention, so I have decided to give a little summary of each popular game on Google Plus. Most of you will grasp what the games are about instantly from playing them but I also want you guys to have the opportunity to add one another via the comments below.  So if you are looking for Google Plus poker buddies, leave your name as a comment below and get adding others!

Google Plus Poker

Feeling Lucky?

Zynga Pokers on Google+ is again another clone of the Facebook version. Players are given starting chips and also a random amount each time they login on a daily basis. These chips can be used to enter “play and go” tables or knock out style tournaments in which players advance through 3 rounds for bigger chip prizes. The chips can then be used to purchase items from the gift shop, play on the slot machine or simply use them to earn even more chips and play on bigger stake tables.

The game also features an experience system in which players gain XP for certain achievements until they level up. Passing certain level thresholds gives you new titles used purely for boasting rights amongst your friends. The game isn’t played with real money so it’s an excellent tool for newcomers, there is even a “Learn to Play” button for those who have never even held a pair of cards in their hand before. Combined with the ability to see friend rankings and a weekly tournament (coming soon) it is definitely worth a try for both poker enthusiasts and beginners alike.

Feel free to add each other below as discussed and ask any questions you have about the game!

Google+ Crime City

Before I begin this post, I want to point out that I am not one to voice opinions or complaints about violent games such as the infamous Grand Theft Auto. I myself am a bit of a gamer and believe that those games can be released providing that age limits or warnings are put into place, it just seems that Google+ is lacking those warnings. Now I understand that you have to be at least 18 to sign up to Google+ so it’s no huge problem at this stage.

Google Plus Crime City

Remind you of recent UK happenings?

“Crime City” on Google+ is an identical clone of the Facebook app, a 3D version of Mafia Wars for those who haven’t come across it. You control a customised character who can roam around different micro cities committing a multitude of crimes as the title suggests. These crimes range from mugging local businesses to performing assassinations on the street, with each crime being represented with a small animation. It is these animations which got my attention pretty quick, the characters are designed like people from the popular Sims games and while there are no gory details such as blood, it could still be slightly disturbing for some players. Choose to mug or threaten someone in the street and you are presented with an animation in which your character shoots or stabs a civilian from point blank range. I may be over reacting but I imagine this will be a shocking experience for a regular Google+ user who is a newcomer to games, the title should give the game concept away but even I wasn’t expecting to see that sort of “cute” violence.

Again, this isn’t a problem as all Google+ users are (meant) to be over 18 years old meaning that an age restriction would be pointless anyway. I think some sort of “Warning: This game includes violence” tag needs to be included on the front of the game though. I suppose I am also surprised that Google went ahead to include the game as I view them as an organisation with a “clean image”, especially considering it was launched while the riots were occurring across the United Kingdom. It will be interesting to see whether complaints are made and what happens if Google does decide to allow minors under the age of 18 to join the social network.

…so who wants to join my Mafia and help kill “Jimmy the Gooch”?

Google+ Games Released

Okay, I’ll admit it. I wasn’t looking forward to Google+ receiving games despite the promise of it not interrupting non gamers. Today Google released the games side of Google Plus, today Google changed my mind.

The feature has been well executed it seems and in a very stylish way. Current Google+ users will now notice a gaming directional pad button towards the top of their page which leads to the main games page. Here users are presented with a pretty impressive games slider showing featured games of which there are now ten (with 16 games in total). The whole interface is very simple for the newest of gamers to pick up and play, while a games stream is located towards the bottom of the page which I imagine will be used to update us of our friends’ gaming pursuits.

Google+ Games

The Eagle has Landed

The choice of games has surprised me more than anything though. It seems that they have selected a suitable game for each demographic including the famous “Angry Birds” and “Zynga Poker” originally used on Facebook. The full games list so far includes:

  • Dragons of Atlantis
  • Angry Birds (Yeaaah!)
  • Zombie Lane
  • Diamond Dash
  • Flood-It!
  • City of Wonder
  • Monster World
  • Wild Ones
  • Zynga Poker
  • Crime City (Cough)
  • Bejeweled Blitz Beta
  • Dragon Age Legends
  • Bubble Island
  • Sudoku Puzzles
  • Collapse! Blast
  • Edgeworld
I myself have only tried Angry Birds so far (for the first time ever) and believe that the games system of Google+ definitely works. People can take it or leave it without having to ever have it shoved in their face by other contacts on the social network.
Please excuse me now as I go lose all my virtual chips in poker!

Google+ Games

That headline may have you jumping for joy or move you to hover your cursor over the “Delete account” button. Don’t click it yet!

Google let the secret out of the bag last week and accidentally mentioned the “Games Stream” as one of the new upcoming features of Google+. We aren’t sure whether this really was an “accident” or simply a way to stir excitement, either way it a very important and essential step for Google+ to compete with Facebook.

Google Plus Games

An essential step forward.

Gaming is a huge feature of Facebook which has even drawn those people who have no interest in using the social side of the networking site. You have most likely experienced all those (annoying) game notifications asking you to “assist someone in battle” or to “water some crops”. It is games like these that have made the Californian based company, Zynga, a billion dollar business while assisting Facebook’s member count all the way.

I can already hear you, “Euggh, I might as well just stick with Facebook then!” But do not fear as there is good news. Google+ is likely to keep the Games Stream separate to the main stream meaning that you will never even have to see a single games notification if you don’t want to. Gone are the times of having to spam your non-gaming friends with annoying requests which most likely make you look a bit of a nerd. It is these little tweaks that will make Google+ better than Facebook in the long run, it’s just a shame that Google is taking the ideas from Facebook’s mistakes!

…water my crops anyone?
