Google Babel – Simplifying Google Chat Streams

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013 | Permalink

In the Bible account of Genesis humanity attempted to build a tower in the city of Babel so tall that it would reach into the heavens and thus allow them to make a name for themselves. God observed this activity and realising their potential power as one race under one language decided to confuse their languages so that they could not understand each other and therefore force them to spread out across the land. If you use Google+, Gmail and other products that use Google Chat then you may feel like the residents of Babel at times, especially when it comes to using them across multiple devices. Google have been working on a way to unify all these chat streams and the end result appears to be a product aptly (or ironically) named Google Babel.

Will Google Babel unify it’s various chat sources?

Information is supposedly meant to be leaked and directed from “sources” at the moment so I wouldn’t quote any of the following but the basic concept is to integrate Google’s chat products; even to the extent of cross-platform notification syncing meaning that if you read and reply to a message on your mobile phone then it will automatically be marked as read on your computer or tablet for example. I personally haven’t had a problem with this but I have definitely come across plenty of people who have complained about the current system, it will be a handy update to have regardless and one that actually reminds me of how Facebook instant messaging already functions.

A leaked Google memo brought out the main features we can expect from Google Babel:

  • A new interface that can be applied across all platforms and products.
  • All of these platforms and products will be fully synced allowing there to be just one conversation list and therefore a more fluid experience.
  • A desktop app so you don’t have to search across open tabs trying to find your conversation, the chat will continue outside the browser.
  • The ability to create group conversations and start Hangouts with them at the touch of a button.
  • Single time notifications keep things simple as opening one on your mobile for example will remove the notifications on your other devices.
  • Photos can now be sent between conversations along with more emoticons which helps make the current dull text boxes more interesting.
  • Chat history can be viewed simply by scrolling backwards in the conversation, something that I have personally been missing for ages.

If the memos and leaks are true then the service looks to be on the right track as every single of those bullet points look very appealing to me. Nonetheless Google still haven’t officially confirmed that Babel is to exist so it will definitely be interesting to see whether it gets a mention during Google I/O 2013.

On a separate note if you are looking for a quick break I would recommend checking out the main page of the Google I/O site, there are various codes hidden within it’s logo…

Can you find the codes? Share your findings in the comments!

Google+ Gets a UK TV Commercial

Monday, April 2nd, 2012 | Permalink

When was the last time you saw a Facebook commercial while watching your television at home? I’m not sure whether it’s the same case outside of the United Kingdom but I’m fairly confident there has never been one aired here. The same goes for that of MySpace, Twitter and all the other mainstream social networks; yet to my surprise a commercial about Google+ appeared on my TV screen during an ad break this weekend, something unexpected in the social networking world as surely the best form of marketing would be… social.

So the main question that springs to mind is: Why? Why are Google pushing their new social network on British television? I imagine the initial reaction made by Facebook supporters and many other bloggers will be, “IT’S BECAUSE GOOGLE+ IS A FAILURE!” But I don’t believe this is the case. In the past we have discussed Google+’s initial growth in comparison to other social networks so I don’t think this is the concern, Obi Felten (Google’s EMEA director of consumer marketing) touched upon one of the reasons being that they wanted to rekindle the interest of original beta users who have missed out on all the updates released since June last year.

The commercial involves a touching life story of how one man progresses through family life as Google+ is used to record the most significant moments. Obi commented: “We realised we needed to drive awareness and show how Google+ is relevant and meaningful to people’s lives as it’s not easy to understand in one sentence – the best way to educate people about a product is to demonstrate it.” I was sceptical when first seeing the commercial but Obi’s comment clarified the need for a television ad; when trying to explain what Google+ is to people I always recommended that they check out the interactive demo for themselves, allowing the public to see it used first hand on their own television screens is probably one of the best ways to generate awareness for the product. I wouldn’t say this is a survival attempt by Google but instead an effort to push forward further, while still being around 750 million users behind Facebook we must remember that the social network is incredibly young and is growing at an exceptionally fast rate despite this.

Google Plus Blog Grows Along with Google+!

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011 | Permalink

December is a busy period for online marketing so I just want to start off by apologising for not updating this blog in a while. The new year is approaching though and it’s time to kick-start back into action, I’m not one for making resolutions but I’m going to be keeping you guys updated to all things Google+ related. I was actually going through the Google+ page for this blog a few minutes ago and was made up to see how many people are following, they have all now been included in the readers circle. I therefore want to welcome all you new readers and also thank the loyal readers who re-share and +1 my posts, I know who you guys are.

This blog hasn’t been the only thing growing though. There are a few unofficial numbers flying around but I’ve seen that there is now between 62 – 150 million people using Google+. I would personally say that it’s most likely closer to the latter though considering that the social network had 20 million members during the first month of it’s invitation only phase which was in July. I doubt that the number of users has only tripled for the duration of 6 months, I imagine there is exponential growth as Google+ users tell their friends about the social network, those friends tell other friends and the cycle  thus continues.

There is still a lot of talk about how Google+ will “survive” or why it will never beat Facebook. I’m amazed this is the case though considering the start it’s had so far; I’ll admit that many people snubbed the idea when first trying the new social network but Google has listened to user feedback over this 6 month period and made an incredible amount of changes which have benefited Google Plus each and every time.

How to: Find and Remove Uncirclers / Unfollowers on Google+

Friday, November 18th, 2011 | Permalink

A while back I showed you guys a list of useful extensions and apps dedicated to Google Plus, one of these extensions was simply called “Uncircle” which identified inactive people within your circles with the opportunity to uncircle them. This is a useful extension but what about the people who unfollow / uncircle you on Google+? I was guilty of adding a shared circle of 500 business people last month with the hope that I would be placed in their circles in return. I later realised that this is a bad attitude and one adopted from my previous experience with Twitter, I don’t want to use Google Plus in this way however and therefore wanted to remove those business contacts who hadn’t circled me while keeping those who had taken the liberty to circle me back.

So what did I find?

The same author of “Uncircle” (Tafreevar) has created another Chrome extension called “Uncircle Uncirclers+” which (as stated in the name) gives you the opportunity to identify which of the people in your circles don’t have you in theirs. Now I have already stated that this isn’t the best attitude to have or could even be considered bitchy but I could see this extension being useful for a number of you reading this. I successfully removed those undesired contacts within 30 seconds without the risk of uncircling users such as yourselves.

Unfollow unfollowers on Google Plus

The interface and process is very easy to use.

The extension allows you to select which circles you want considered into the analysis to avoid removing specific contacts such as celebrities, family and friends for example. In my case some of those business people were also within my “Celebrities” circle which meant I could have accidently removed them in the process, thankfully the extension allowed me to exclude the “Celebrities” circle however meaning they were not displayed on the uncircle list. Once you have selected the appropriate filters it’s simply a case of clicking Apply, you are then presented with a list of “People who don’t circle you back” with checkboxes next to their names. Click on Uncircle once you have reviewed the generated list and they will be automatically removed from your Google+ circles in a matter of seconds. Job done!

Bank of America’s Fake Google+ Page

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011 | Permalink

I recently commented how Google+’s pages were open to people creating fake profiles on famous figures despite having a strict real name policy for regular profiles. It seems that somebody proved my theory correct as a false Bank of America page was created on Google Plus making a mockery of the nation’s largest bank. The page included a number of posts and images attacking the bank while each one was shared and +1′d by some of the 500 followers of the page. One of these posts included the following message:

Starting tomorrow, all Occupy Wall Street protestors with Bank of America accounts around the country will have their assets seized as part of BofA’s new Counter-Financial-Terrorism policy. You will sit down and shut up, or we will foreclose on you.

Bank of America Google Plus

How will Google stop incidents like this in the future?

This process now known as “brandjacking” has been seen on a number of social networks  but it seems that Google+ has become a victim too due to the lack identity protection for their pages release. There are concerns over the fact it was able to be put up in the first place (on November 8th) and managed to survive a week without being taken down until Bank of America shared their concerns with Google. Since my previous post about Google+ pages it looks like the verification tick has been introduced to pages but I still believe creating pages has to be a harder process to complete to avoid cases like this happening on a frequent basis.

Surely it would be simple to ask page creators to introduce a unique meta tag to their site in order to verify they own it?

Google+ Sparks have Disappeared

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011 | Permalink

…or have they?

You may have noticed that the original Sparks header vanished from your left sidebar a while ago while the actual Sparks you saved are still there. At first I thought it was a temporary interface error but day by day passed and my Sparks header did not return. I then decided to question the Google+ community to see whether they were experiencing the same problem:

Google Plus Sparks Question

I wasn't the only one with the "error".

It seemed that this was not an error at all but a feature change made by Google (credit goes to David A Jamieson and Thomas Hale, Jr for working out where Sparks has been relocated). So if you were like me and looking for Sparks, look no further:

You now need to use the Google+ Search Bar and enter an interest of your choice that you wish to add as a Spark. The next step is to navigate to the Sparks tab located just above the search results. You will then see the option to Save this search towards the top right corner of the central column, the Spark will then be saved to the left sidebar of your profile permanently.

How to add google plus sparks

Three simple steps and you'll be adding Sparks in no time.

I admit I prefer the old system of adding Sparks and have no idea why it has been changed but Google must have it’s reasons!

Remove Inactive Google+ Contacts from Your Circles

Monday, September 26th, 2011 | Permalink

In the days when I used to use Twitter on a daily (or hourly) basis, I would Use Qwitter to identify who had stopped following me so I could do the same in return. It sounds immature but I actually used the account as a bit of a marketing tool and decided to replace these quitters with valuable followers instead. A similar Chrome extension has been added for Google+ called Uncircle+, allowing you to remove those inactive users who never post from your circles.

The extension itself is fairly simple to us. Just make sure you are logged into your Google account, hit the UnCircle+ logo in the top right corner of your Chrome browser and a list of your circled contacts will be automatically generated. Follow the prompts and the extension will identify which of your contacts are inactive and give you the opportunity to uncircle them at the touch of a button. If you have new contacts who are inactive but are soon to be posting then simply uncheck the box next to their name before pressing the “Remove Selected!” button.

Remove inactive Google+ users

It might be too early but a scheduled clean is always a good practice.

Hopefully you’ll find this useful and if not now, then in the future! Credit goes to Sidharth who originally found it and I unfortunately cannot find the developers name.

Please note that it will take email invited contacts into consideration too. What do you guys think?

6 Free Chrome Extensions for Google+

Thursday, September 15th, 2011 | Permalink

I haven’t had a look at the Chrome Web Store for a while so I decided to check out what is on offer with regards to the Google Plus beta launch. I was actually surprised at how many extensions and apps were included and even more so at how well reviewed and rated most of them were. I had a look at other blogs before creating this post to make sure I wasn’t simply reproducing summaries on the same Google+ extensions, so read on if you are looking to find new and awesome additions!

Auto-Colorizer for Google Plus

Not strictly a useful app but pretty clever and arty nonetheless. After installing this, head to your Google+ profile and it will begin to flash colours like a mini disco. You don’t have to worry about your screen, the app is just modifying the colour scheme of your profile according to your display picture. Navigate to a friend’s profile, game or any other page and the app will kick in again adapting the colours to suit the rest of the page content. I have to admit that I would like to be able to customise the colours for my own profile (as grey is pretty boring as you can see below) but it’s simply a case of changing your display picture to get a new colour scheme.

Pretty dull but it's all down to the display picture you include.

Stream Filter for Google Plus

This extension is quite honestly a godsend for me (and possibly for many of you too). This stream filter gives you the ability to filter out particular words or all animated gif images from your stream leaving more relevant content for your viewing. I personally don’t mind seeing the odd gif image now and then but I imagine it could be incredibly frustrating for those of you who don’t want to see cats doing “funny things” all the time. It is also a useful tool for those who are sensitive to certain topics, language or simply don’t want to hear about how “hot Bieber is” anymore.

Tempted to put some names of annoying celebrities in there?

Google Translate for Google+

The title is pretty self explanatory, this extension will automatically detect a language and translate it for you all at the touch of a “Translate” button. You can select exactly what posts you want translating and Google translate will do it’s best for you! It’s a handy extension to have and looks like it already belongs to Google+ meaning there is no clutter on your profile.

Translate languages you probably can't even identify, all at the touch of a button!

G+me for Google Plus

Currently one of the best rated extensions for Google+ with 5 stars and 32,700+ users. G+me gives you the ability to collapse the whole Google+ stream in terms of comments, posts, etc, making for easier navigation and readability. Simply mouse over a post which catches your eye and a preview will be displayed instantly to the side before even having to click on it. There is also a real time comment / notification feature which brings your attention to any updates on individual posts meaning you will never miss a thing. I recommend that everyone give this extension a try, just remember to go into the extension options to enable the collapsible list.

Keep your incoming posts collapsed for better organisation.

Helper for Google+

Everyone likes a helping hand and this extension does exactly that for your Google+ profile. Helper for Google+ adds additional functions to Google Plus including the option to share posts with Twitter, Facebook, Delicious and other social networking sites. Other features include the ability to bookmark posts, a desktop notifier (equipped with sound) and a one click  search for hashtags.

These are just some of the included features, try it out to see them all.

Extended Share for Google Plus

Similar to the extension mentioned above but focusing more on sharing and with additional networks. Simply click the “Share on…” button below a post and have the option to forwards the post to: Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Tumblr, Technorati, Blogger, Reddit, etc. There are many more networks to include and you can select which ones you want via the options menu.

Extended share for google+

Share your findings with the whole networking world.

I hope these Google+ extensions make your social networking life that little more easier and I shall keep an eye out for more in the future. Let me know how you get on with them and whether you have some of your own to share with our readers.

How to: Add Twitter to Google+

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011 | Permalink

This is not a strict step by step guide on how to add Twitter to your Google Plus profile but you may still find it beneficial. In my post previous to this I mentioned Google+Facebook, an extension / app which integrates your Facebook feed directly into the safe and cosy world of your Google+ account. The same developer (Bruno Barbieri) has developed something similar for Twitter; simply install Google+Twitter, authorise your Twitter account and then hit “Go”. You can now click on the Twitter (birdy) logo on your Google+ tabs and be presented with a (reduced) version of your Twitter account!

I doubt this will be used as a replacement to some of the Twitter clients out there but it is certainly a handy feature if you want to check what’s going on in the Twitter world without having to navigate away from your Google Plus profile. Combine this with the Facebook version and you pretty much have all your main social networks under one roof.
