Google+ Gets a UK TV Commercial

Monday, April 2nd, 2012 | Permalink

When was the last time you saw a Facebook commercial while watching your television at home? I’m not sure whether it’s the same case outside of the United Kingdom but I’m fairly confident there has never been one aired here. The same goes for that of MySpace, Twitter and all the other mainstream social networks; yet to my surprise a commercial about Google+ appeared on my TV screen during an ad break this weekend, something unexpected in the social networking world as surely the best form of marketing would be… social.

So the main question that springs to mind is: Why? Why are Google pushing their new social network on British television? I imagine the initial reaction made by Facebook supporters and many other bloggers will be, “IT’S BECAUSE GOOGLE+ IS A FAILURE!” But I don’t believe this is the case. In the past we have discussed Google+’s initial growth in comparison to other social networks so I don’t think this is the concern, Obi Felten (Google’s EMEA director of consumer marketing) touched upon one of the reasons being that they wanted to rekindle the interest of original beta users who have missed out on all the updates released since June last year.

The commercial involves a touching life story of how one man progresses through family life as Google+ is used to record the most significant moments. Obi commented: “We realised we needed to drive awareness and show how Google+ is relevant and meaningful to people’s lives as it’s not easy to understand in one sentence – the best way to educate people about a product is to demonstrate it.” I was sceptical when first seeing the commercial but Obi’s comment clarified the need for a television ad; when trying to explain what Google+ is to people I always recommended that they check out the interactive demo for themselves, allowing the public to see it used first hand on their own television screens is probably one of the best ways to generate awareness for the product. I wouldn’t say this is a survival attempt by Google but instead an effort to push forward further, while still being around 750 million users behind Facebook we must remember that the social network is incredibly young and is growing at an exceptionally fast rate despite this.

Vic Gundotra & Sergey Brin Discuss Google+ at Web 2.0 Summit

Vic Gundotra and Sergey Brin were recently on the stage at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco discussing the progress of their social network and what the future holds for Google+. So what was said?

  • Google App account users will now be able to use Google Plus as initially no support was provided, something that Vic publicly apologised for.
  • We can expect the awaited ‘Brand Pages’ to be released within a very short time period along with “clever surprises”. This gives companies and brands the opportunity to have a presence on Google+ rather than the current restriction of individual accounts.
  • There have been complaints from Google+ developers about the API being rather restricted. Vic addressed this issue by stating they are taking a slow approach to releasing the social network’s APIs after noting the problems Facebook Connect has caused for it’s developers in the past.
  • I have seen article after article focusing on the issue of using real names in Google+. Vic explained that they initially wanted to create an atmosphere around real identities but that there will be pseudonym support for Google Plus in the future.
John Battelle (host of the interview) questioned the pair on whether they were happy with the initial progress of the social network with regards to obtaining over 40 million users and whether those 40 million users are actually using the service. Vic answered positively with sound reasoning before John stated that it was 4% of Google’s user base, I personally think it’s a good start myself after only operating on public release for just over a month.

Is it just me or does anyone think that Sergey Brin looks like Zach Braff from Scrubs?

Google+ Passes the 20 Million Mark

Despite Google+ still only being in an invitation only phase, it has already gained 20 million activations in less than a month. This already makes it the fastest growing social network without even being fully open to the public, imagine what will happen during it’s full release! Many were sceptical on whether Google could really create something innovative and revolutionary enough to get Facebook and Twitter users to migrate to Google+ but it seems the initial figures have already proven it’s possible.

Sign of the Future?

I have been asking my friends and associates over the last few weeks whether they have Google+, simply to be greeted with a quizzical look and, “What’s that?”.  It seems that the majority of social network users aren’t even aware that Google+ is out there yet, nevermind being a strong competitor in the social network race.

Google+ was launched on June 28th in a beta (invitation only) release and has therefore generated 20 million users in 30 days. Facebook has been running since February 2004 and according to their official statistics page has “more than 750 million active users” for a period of just over 7 years. If Google+ was to maintain it’s member activation pace over the same period of time Facebook has been running then it would eventually have 1,680 million users and don’t forget these initial 20 million are only from invitations so far. It will be interesting to see the statistics once Google+ goes into full release.

Something for Facebook to worry about?

…definitely.
